Habits That Keep You Awake Late At Night

Staying up late has become quite common in contemporary times. Even  if you are a student who is preparing for exams or a professional working on a major project, this may be applicable. For most individuals, staying awake late at night is difficult simply because it is natural to feel sleepy. However, some habits can help you stay up late.

Building these habits would enable you to keep yourself awake without feeling too tired or sleepy. These range from eating habits and lifestyle habits to adjusting the ambiance of the room. Knowing about the habits that keep you awake late at night would help you utilize your time with maximum efficiency.

How to keep awake late at night? Best tips to stay up late

While there are many ways to stay up late at night, not every technique is effective for every individual or situation. Hence, it is logical to keep yourself aware of as many as possible, try them out, and find the ones that work the best for you.

Some of the best tricks to stay up late at night are:

Healthy Diet

1.Have healthy snacks

Eating snacks can be refreshing when you feel bored or tired. However, it is possible to stick to healthy snacks, especially due to the timing. Items like peanut butter, yoghurt, baby carrots, etc., can provide your body with an energy boost.

2. Take naps

Napping is a great way to rest and rejuvenate your brain. It helps to get rid of some of the sleepiness and allows you to stay awake for longer. However, the nap must last between five to twenty-five minutes as napping for too long can be counterproductive. It is also advisable to take your nap at least six to seven hours before your usual bedtime.

3. Take a walk

Taking a walk can be quite energizing and a great way to keep yourself energized while staying awake late at night. This is because when you walk, it pumps oxygen through your brain, muscles, and veins. If you have a desk job, take short but frequent walks.

Whether you take a walk indoors or outdoors, try to go to an area that feels refreshing.

Sleep Well!

4. Get a good night’s sleep in advance

If you are aware of your schedule beforehand and know that you would be staying up late, it might help you get a good night’s sleep first. Staying awake is much harder when your body already lacks adequate sleep.

Sleep for seven to nine hours on the night before you stay up late.

5. Adjust the light

The brain uses complex patterns to link the amount of available light with the anatomical clock. By adjusting the light and ambiance around you, you can keep sleepiness away. Brightly lit environments help to keep fatigued away and stay awake for longer.

However, it is advisable to dim the lights a bit as your bedtime approaches.

6. Breathing exercises

Performing deep breathing exercises is a superb way to keep yourself energetic and awake. It increases oxygen levels, slows the heart rate, improves circulation, and lowers blood pressure. This can boost your energy as well as your physical and mental performance.

Things to be careful of:

Now that you know how to stay up late, it would be much easier. However, there are a few things that you should be wary of. Building bad habits can prove to be rather detrimental.

1. Avoid alcohol

Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages if you plan to stay up late at night. Many consume alcohol as a means to keep themselves awake. However, it would eventually make you feel overly sleepy and pass out.

If you visit a party in the evening, make sure to avoid drinking too much. You would not want to compromise on your ability to remain awake that night.

Control Caffeine Intake

2. Control your caffeine intake

Consuming coffee, tea, chocolates, soda, energy drinks, and other caffeinated items is a popular way of staying awake. Caffeine blunts the sleepiness signals by blocking the adenosine receptors.

However, consuming too much caffeine regularly may cause you to suffer from insomnia.

3. Staying awake while driving

Falling asleep while you are behind the wheel can be extremely dangerous. Most individuals resort to turning on loud music or opening the windows. While these are effective as short-term solutions, you would eventually get sleepy over time.

It is highly advisable to stop the car when you feel sleepy and take a nap. If it is a very long trip, switching drivers or walking outside every two hours might help.

Conclusion

If you have been struggling to find out “how to keep awake late at night?”, these tips should help you out. Just make sure to stick to healthy and safe practices, and you would be able to keep yourself awake for much longer than usual.
