Review of Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer: Best Hydrating Primer for Dry & Dehydrated Skin?

I only started paying attention to makeup primers when I realized they are the ultimate makeup deal sealers (and breakers)! While some argue they’re an optional step, for my combination and dehydrated skin, the right base is essential for achieving a smooth, dewy look. Today I am reviewing Illamasqua Hydra Veil primer. With its unique jelly texture and promise of instant radiance, is this truly the best hydrating primer for dry and thirsty skin? Let’s find out if it lives up to the hype!

Review of Illamasqua Hydra Veil Makeup Primer:

Product Description:

Create a smooth, hydrated skin finish with Hydra Veil’s unique self-levelling gel formula. This innovative primer minimises the appearance of pores and helps protect against dryness, providing the optimal base for your make-up. To create the perfect canvas, apply before foundation using an Illamasqua foundation brush. Dermatologically tested.

The best-selling clear gel instantly helps skin feel hydrated and smooth. The lightweight, water-based formula is quickly absorbed by the skin and creates the perfect base for long-wear foundation application, leaving your skin looking flawless. The clear gel is infused with Vitamin B3 and Sodium Hyaluronate, which holds more than 1000 times its weight in water, making it perfect for moisturising the skin. Acmella Oleracea Extract instantly blurs the appearance of fine lines and makes your skin look smoother.

Price & Qty:

I noticed that the Illamasqua brand has shut down its official website and now sells its products through Lookfantastic and other beauty retail sites. I got both the standard 30ml and travel-size (7ml) versions. You can currently only find the 7ml sample primer on these sites đŸ‘‡đŸ».

How To Use:

Apply before foundation to smooth away any unwanted texture, such as fine lines and open pores. Prior to foundation application, use the spoon provided to apply one scoop to the palm of your hand. Using a foundation or highlighter brush, gently brush the product from your hand and apply all over the face, right up to the lash line until the product is absorbed.

My experience With Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer:

I received a sample-size Illamasqua primer in one of my beauty subscription boxes a few years ago. After using it a couple of times, I was completely smitten with it, so I bought the full-size primer from the official website a year ago. Recently, I noticed that their website is gone and they now sell their products through other beauty retail sites.

I have combination, dehydrated, acne-prone skin. I love using water-based skincare and makeup products as they impart a dewy effect and make my skin look radiant and healthy.

Product Packaging:

Both the travel and standard versions of the Illamasqua primer come housed in elegant, sleek, matte-black card boxes with the brand’s emblem on the top lid. You can find all the important details, including the ingredient list, on the back of the outer boxes. Both feature a sleek, spherical pot design that looks modern and sophisticated. However, there is a slight difference between the two versions.

The top-right panel displays the open jars with their white protective seals and a small black applicator spatula. The bottom-left panel shows the closed, glossy black spherical jars. The bottom-right panel features the larger jar open, revealing the clear, jelly-textured primer inside and the spatula stored in the lid. All images are set against a vibrant pink background with white orchid accents.

The 30ml standard-size primer container comes with a spatula applicator. The underside of the main black lid features a dedicated slot where the small black spatula is securely stored, ensuring that the applicator remains clean and never gets lost while still being easily accessible for each application.

Beneath the main black lid, there is a flat white plastic disc. It sits directly on top of the gel, acting as a secondary shield against air exposure before the main lid is screwed on. There is also a white rubber-like sealing ring inside the main lid to prevent evaporation and help keep the formula fresh and stable.

The smaller 7ml primer container follows a similar, albeit simplified, structural design. It features a basic white press-in plastic cap that acts as a seal. This ensures the product stays contained and protected, even in a smaller, more portable size.

Make sure you do not remove the inner disc at any cost. I made that mistake, and the product dried out much faster than expected!

Product Texture:

True to its name, Hydra Veil has a clear, slightly viscous, bouncy, jelly-like texture with no fragrance.

How I use this Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer:

I use this water-based hydrating Illamasqua primer under all my water-based foundations and hydrating powder foundations.

After applying moisturiser and sunscreen (during the daytime) to my skin, I give them at least a minute to settle. Then I take one scoop of the Hydra Veil primer either onto the back of my hand or directly onto my cheeks. It’s probably better to apply it to your palm rather than your cheeks, but each to their own!

The top-right panel shows an open black jar of the primer next to its lid, which has a small applicator spatula tucked inside. The bottom-right panel shows the primer being blended into the skin on the back of a hand, appearing translucent and hydrating. The collage is framed in teal and set against a bright pink background.

The brand also suggests using a foundation or highlighter brush to gently apply the product all over the face. However, I simply use my fingers until the product is fully absorbed. I again wait at least 5 minutes before moving on to the next makeup step: foundation.

Also, make sure you are using the right combination of products while doing your makeup. Water-based makeup products should ideally be paired with water-based skincare products, while oil-based makeup products work better with oil-based skincare. This helps combat makeup separation and cakeyness. Honestly, this was one of the biggest makeup lessons I learned a few years ago while dealing with some truly frustrating makeup mishaps.

How Does It Work (Product Performance):

The Hydra Veil is well regarded in the beauty community for its unique jelly-like texture. Unlike traditional cream primers, the full-size version arrives with a tiny spoon tucked inside the lid to help scoop out the gel hygienically, as the formula is designed to bounce back and settle once disturbed. Quite thoughtful design, right?

During application, you will notice that the product holds its shape as a dollop on the skin, indicating its bouncy, self-levelling texture. You only need a small amount of product to prime the face. Once applied, the transparent gel formula is quickly absorbed by the skin, leaving it feeling tacky, hydrated, and smooth ❀.

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer boasts several skin-friendly ingredients such as Glycerin (a humectant), Niacinamide (Vitamin B3), Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid (a Vitamin C derivative), and Acmella Oleracea Extract. However, do not skip your moisturizer and sunscreen before applying this primer. This product alone cannot save dehydrated skin, especially during colder months.

Though I do not have major pore issues, my dry, dehydrated cheeks look noticeably smoother and more refined after application, and the primed canvas looks absolutely ready for foundation. The sticky, hydrating base allows for easy application of both liquid and powder foundations. Since the primer doesn’t have strong scent to it, people with sensitive noses should not find it bothersome.

The right panel shows the final result with a full face of makeup. A text overlay across the bottom reads "BARE MOISTURIZED SKIN + FOUNDATION – Full Face Makeup," with the product name "HYDRA VEIL PRIMER" centered above it.

I use a MAC silicone-based serum-cum-primer with my silicone-based MAC Matchmaster Foundation and this hydrating water-based primer with Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation and YENSA serum and powder foundations.

I love how Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer works beautifully in tandem with water-based and serum foundations. It helps makeup last longer without dryness or cakeyness, and my skin looks smooth and radiant once my full makeup is done.

Some may argue that Estée Lauder foundations are silicone-based and should only be paired with silicone primers, but somehow this combination works amazingly well for my dehydrated skin. I have experienced no makeup separation or cracking so far. I do finish my makeup with a hydrating setting spray, though!

This primer has been around in the beauty market for ages, but I only got the chance to try it a few years ago. And now, when I have finally found the perfect primer for my skin, the official website disappears. Typical beauty-lover luck, haha 😂!

I think I will either repurchase it from Glossybox or start searching for a good alternative for my combination-dry skin. Do share your favourite hydrating primers in the comments because I am always ready to try something new.

Overall,

Illamasqua Hydra Veil Primer is a fabulous vegan, water-based hydrating primer with a unique self-levelling gel formula. Aside from giving the skin a beautiful dewy glow, it also helps protect against dryness and makeup cracking issues. This Hydra Veil Primer pairs exceptionally well with Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation (my shade is 3W2 Cashew), just in case you were wondering!
