Northampton Winter Light Trail 2024 Review | Delapré Abbey

One of my favourite Winter activities is to visit the holiday-themed light shows and trails with my husband. Recently, we explored the enchanting Winter light trail at Delapré Abbey, Northampton. If you live in Milton Keynes or nearby looking for a new festive seasonal event this year, this spot is perfect for kids and families. Want to know more? Keep scrolling down!

The historic house, Delapré Abbey, is located in Northamptonshire. It takes about 25 minutes to reach by car from Central Milton Keynes via the M1. Alternatively, you can take a train, which takes around 16–18 minutes. We booked an Uber cab and arrived around 5 PM, which was our time slot for the event.

Things to do and see at Northampton Winter Light Trail 2024:

Our cab dropped us at the parking lot, and from there, we walked toward the main historical building, Delapré Abbey. A helpful signboard guided us to the light trail.

The trail begins with a large illuminated WELCOME sign installation. The ticket-checking counter is located here.

The first display greets you with immersive Christmas-themed floor animations. The massive gates are illuminated with golden lights, reminding me of my hometown’s Durga Puja celebrations, where many pandals are decorated similarly! We had also seen similar animations during Kew Gardens’ light shows.

A short walk later, we found a giant Christmas tree adorned with fairy lights and gift box installations.

Since we visited on a rainy day, the ground was muddy. Be cautious when walking the trail in such weather. We also noticed some areas with insufficient lighting, so bringing a flashlight or using your phone light is a good idea, especially if you have kids with you.

After the Christmas tree, we passed stunning illuminated trees leading to a gorgeous half-circle (protractor-shaped) trail. Walking through it brought us to the next display, themed around music.

Musical Floor

Delapré Abbey features an interactive musical floor display, similar to what we enjoyed at the Lightopia event in 2021. As you step on the floor, it plays notes. The entire area is dedicated to music, with colorful musical notes of varying sizes displayed on trees and nearby.

The next display featured a charming yet massive BEAR installation, perfect for photo-ops. Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking a ton of selfies! 😛

Further along, we encountered enchanting, ball-shaped light displays. Some hung from trees, while others adorned the ground.

The trail’s charm continued with a pink and purple illuminated garden decorated with crystal ball-shaped lights, making a wonderful spot for photography. The photos near the crystals display turned out bright and beautiful. The fun part is, here, you’ll experience a flow of light projections. These displays created a mesmerizing “dancing light” effect, making the area feel magical.

Tunnel Of Light

The tunnel of light is another highlight which looks like a dome-shaped structure, designed with hundreds of golden fairy lights. While it’s not as grand as Kew Gardens’ Cathedral of Light, Abbey’s light tunnel is nothing short of stunning!

Adjacent to it, there is a food stall with seating arrangements where you can stop by and relax for a while. The giant tree illuminated at its base with silver lights next to it is pretty attractive!

The Penguin Globe light display, surrounded by sparkling Christmas trees is simply mesmerizing. The pillars in this area are adorned with cute Santa and Snowman figurines.

In the same vicinity, there is another Christmas tree display in a Pyramid shape. The blue and white colour combination looks gorgeous!

Do you enjoy spooky theme? If yes, then their next Lantern lighting display will surely blow your mind away! As you walk along the trail, you will come across a number of black vintage Hurricane lanterns hanging from the tree branches. The dim garden is lit with just lanterns (of course, LED) giving off that thrilling and captivating vibes. Gosh, I absolutely loved that display!

There is a photo-booth next to it, a stunning celestial moon-shaped  installation surrounded by mini star lights. Capture dreamy photos of you or loved ones sitting on the moon!

There are a few colourful, glowing, Star-shaped light structures are on display on left side of the garden. They provide enough light from afar to shine your path 😀 . The narrow trail’s railings are strung with fairy lights for added charm.

Along the way, you’ll find beautiful Rose display featuring several illuminated rose-shaped floral lights on both sides of the trail, creating an ethereal scene.

There is a small area dedicated to Bees Exhibition organized by St Andrew’s Healthcare team, showcases Insects, animals and birds light installations. You’ll see Grasshoppers, Bunnies, Owl, Frogs, Squirrels, Swans, Mushrooms, Beetles and Bees. The lovely Bees installation  is ideal for photo ops!

Moving ahead, you’ll find beautifully lit trees!

Next comes my favourite light installation where they have decorated a small area with hanging colored LED bulbs and you just walk through it. It looks simply amazing, offering cinematic vibes! This was my favorite spot, as the photos and videos turned out amazing!

Another standout is a blue Christmas tree decorated with hand-painted baubles by students at the Abbey.

A few minutes of walk and you’ll find another interactive musical lights display mimicking a fountain, which kids absolutely loved.

The grand finale includes a Christmassy romantic sound and light projection, featuring heart emojis and festive tracks.

Finally, the Food Village awaits at the end of the trail, with vendors selling mulled wine, burgers, pizzas, and hot chocolate. You can even pre-book cozy chalets here.

While the management didn’t decorate the event entrance or name the installations (as many other light trails do), and some areas were dimly lit, we still had a great time at the event.

With more than 20 enchanting lights displays, colourful illuminated trees, and magical installations, Northampton Winter Light Trail 2024 at Delapré Abbey is an amazing festive attraction for families to visit this Holiday season 🤩.

  1. This looks like a fun place to visit especially with kids. I think they have something similar here. I’ll have to check. I’m running out of time to find it though. I share custody with my son’s dad. My son would love to go to something like this.

  2. I do love this sort of trail over the festive period. The lights look so pretty and really do help get you in a Christmassy mood. It’s a great idea for a family outing that can be finished perfectly at the food village with a warming hot chocolate.

  3. Oh how lovely. I love in Germany and we have Christmas markets that also light up the cities over the festive season. Your pictures remind me a lot of this. Enjoy the lights and festive time.

  4. this looks so beautiful! we have a similar drive-through christmas lights in the park locally and it has been a few years since we went to that one.. i am looking for other new options as well to check out locally this year and someday here in Northampton as well

  5. I love Christmas lights! The darkness and short days of winter can be a little bit of a bummer, but Christmas lights are always so cheerful! You should look into the Christmas lights display at Bentleyville in Duluth, MN. I went this year and it was so incredible! They really went all out!
