Shelf Life of The Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo:
The shelf-life of this ginger shampoo is 12 months from opening the packaging and three years when unopened.
My experience with The Body Shop Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo:
(Hair type: Type 1C, Oily, itchy scalp with dry hair ends, Dandruff-prone & frizzy)
I have been using The Body Shop’s hair care products for the past seven years. The ginger anti-dandruff shampoo was the second hair product after the banana variant that I tried for my hair. Recently, the brand has changed its product packaging, but the formula of the ginger range remains the same.
Before reviewing this shampoo, let me share a few details about my hair. I have thin, shoulder-length, type 1 C hair (straight hair with wavy ends) and an oily, itchy scalp with dandruff, hair fall, and frizziness issues.
The Body Shop® Ginger Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, which I own, currently comes in a 250 ml, deep green, recyclable plastic bottle secured with a flip-top cap. As mentioned, they have revamped the packaging of this shampoo. It looks more organic and beautiful now. Earlier (before 2022), it would come in a brown-colored, similar-shaped simple plastic bottle! You can find all the product-related information on the packaging and the main website. If sealed neatly, it is travel-friendly.
Product Texture & Consistency:
The Body Shop Ginger shampoo has a transparent gel-like texture with a runny consistency. It has a refreshing ginger fragrance.
How do I use The Body Shop anti-dandruff ginger shampoo?
I always mix shampoo with a little amount of water in a bath mug before applying it to my hair. Honestly, I find this method more convenient for my hair than direct application. I usually wash my hair twice a week with shampoos. But as this is an anti-dandruff, clarifying shampoo, I use it only once/twice a month these days (more on it below). I take only a tiny amount of this shampoo to cleanse my oily, dirty scalp and hair. Post rinsing, I slather a generous quantity of Ginger conditioner onto my hair from roots to tips and moisturize the tresses.
How does it work (Performance)?
My husband and I have totally different hair textures and concerns. He is blessed with a dry, itchy scalp & oily hair with severe flaky dandruff issues, and I have an oily, itchy scalp and dry hair with mild dandruff problems. However, both of us love The Body Shop® Ginger shampoo!
The first time I tried this ginger shampoo, it aggravated the scalp itching issue. The reason was regular use of this hair cleanser! I would wash my hair every alternate day with the Body Shop anti-dandruff shampoo, and sometimes I’d skip the conditioner step as well! As a result, my scalp used to feel drier, and the itching wouldn’t let me sleep peacefully at night. Then, after a few trials and errors, I observed that for my hair condition, washing my mane once/twice a month with this anti-dandruff shampoo is enough to keep the dandruff and itchiness at bay!
You must be wondering why I did that in the first place. It is because, first, I love its zingy ginger fragrance, and secondly, it makes hair soft and bouncy. Now, the Ginger plant has a myriad of hair benefits as it has antioxidants, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. It helps reduce scalp infection, inflammation, hair damage, and thereby promoting hair growth.
Aside from Ginger oil, its other main ingredients are Birch Bark Extract and White Willow Bark Extract. So, naturally, I assumed regular use of it would be great for my hair. Nevertheless, my current hair care routine with this ginger shampoo and conditioner (once/twice a month) is working fine. Hence, I am highly pleased with it. I have no more dandruff, scalp itching, or irritation issues, yay!
The Body Shop anti-dandruff ginger shampoo effectively cleanses the hair and removes dirt and impurities from the scalp. It lathers up well and also is easy to rinse out. My scalp feels super light and clean after each hair wash! Like facial skin, my scalp’s skin also becomes severely dry during the colder months. Hence, using nourishing hair masks or conditioners is a must-do step with this clarifying anti-dandruff shampoo. Post-conditioning, my scalp feels soothed, and my hair feels much smoother and softer.
The brand clearly states that the ginger shampoo is ideal for dry, itchy scalp, and it’s true. My husband has been using this ginger shampoo for the past six years to get rid of flaky dandruff. And The Body Shop® ginger shampoo works wonders for his dry scalp and hair!
Does The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo Banish Dandruff Permanently?
Nope! The dandruff removal effect is temporary, and the flakes come back to irritate you again. If you have severe dandruff issues like my husband, use this ginger shampoo frequently. I have mild dandruff issue, so using it even once a month is fine for me.
Can Oily scalp people use The Body Shop Ginger Anti-dandruff Shampoo?
Yes, you can! It doesn’t matter whether you have an oily or dry scalp with dandruff issues. Make sure to use moisturizing hair masks or conditioners after cleansing your hair with this anti-dandruff ginger shampoo. You can also pre-treat your hair/scalp with a nice oil massage followed by shampooing and conditioning your hair.
If the itching or dryness issues still persist, reduce its usage. You can follow my exact hair routine with this product if you have a similar hair type, texture, and concern as mine.
Does The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo Contain Harmful Ingredients:
The Body Shop ginger anti-dandruff shampoo is composed of some soothing, as well as some not-so-good ingredients like Sulfate (SLES) and perfuming agents. If you are allergic to any of these, please skip it. Read the ingredients label well before you make a purchase, always.
Is The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo good for Color-treated hair?
Kindly note The Body Shop® ginger shampoo is not sulfate-free. And the ‘Ginger+SLES+Sodium Chloride’ combination doesn’t favor the color-treated hair. That is why I use this shampoo right before my natural hair dye day every month! If you color your hair for styling purposes or to cover the grey strands, the faster color fading might disappoint you!
Does The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo Lessen Hair Fall?
In my case, no! I have PCOD, so hair fall has become a part of my life now. Also, I have no such high expectations from shampoos regarding my hair fall reduction. I simply use hair cleansers to clean my scalp and hair, nothing else.

What I Don’t Like About/Cons of The Body Shop Ginger Shampoo?
The list of ingredients! I love using scented products. Hence, I’m fine with its perfuming agents. However, I hate that it accelerates the hair color fading. Since I dye my mane at home with herbal colors, I would appreciate it if they removed sulfate and Sodium Chloride from the composition and added more natural, soothing components to its next improved version.
The Body Shop Ginger Anti-dandruff Shampoo is an amazing cruelty-free hair cleanser that effectively eradicates dandruff without drying out the scalp. Its strong yet not-so-overpowering ginger aroma refreshes your senses, plus the shampoo leaves your hair soft and bouncy. It is undoubtedly one of the best vegan, paraben-free hair cleansers for clearing the flaky dandruff. Hence, if you have mild or severe dandruff issues, give it a try!
